Essaouira Morocco is known as the windy capital of Africa, and rightly so. This coastal city is famous for its strong Atlantic winds, making it a hotspot for kitesurfers from around the world. But beyond the surf culture, Essaouira has a completely different side to it as well: a laid-back coastal atmosphere mixed with history, markets, seafood, and traditional Moroccan charm.

I spent 5 days here and honestly wish I had longer. The more I travel, the more I realize that eating is one of my favorite parts about experiencing somewhere new, and Essaouira quickly became one of my favorite food destinations in Morocco. Between the bustling seafood port, lively markets, oceanfront cafes, and endless little streets to wander through, it’s the kind of place that’s very easy to settle into.

Whether you’re visiting Morocco for surfing, culture, food, or simply to slow down for a few days by the ocean, Essaouira is absolutely worth adding to your itinerary. Let’s get into everything I discovered while there to help you plan your trip.

A Little Bit About Essaouira Morocco

Essaouira is a coastal city located on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, around a 3-hour drive west of Marrakech. Today, it’s best known for its laid-back atmosphere, surfing and kitesurfing scene, fresh seafood, and historic medina.

The city itself dates back to the 1700s when it was redesigned and fortified by Sultan Mohammed III as an important trading port connecting Morocco with Europe and the rest of Africa. Because of this, Essaouira quickly became one of the country’s most important commercial hubs, particularly for goods like spices, textiles, and sugar.

Today, the old medina (which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is still surrounded by its original stone walls and oceanfront ramparts. Inside, you’ll find winding alleyways filled with markets, local craftsmen, cafes, and small shops selling everything from spices and pottery to handmade woodwork.

Compared to some of Morocco’s larger cities, Essaouira feels much more relaxed and easygoing, which is honestly part of its charm. It’s the kind of place where you can spend hours wandering around without much of a plan, and that’s exactly what I did.

Details About Essaouira & Morocco

Location, Language & Currency

Essaouira is located on Morocco’s central Atlantic coast in Africa. It is a muslim country, and the main languages spoken are Arabic, Berber and French. The currency is MAD or Dirham and the conversion is $1.00USD equals about $9.30MAD at the time of writing.

The People

The Moroccan people I have found to be incredibly kind and helful, with a lovely sense of humor. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, and can’t wait to go back. I encountered friendly people who were quick to give a helping hand, share a hug or a laugh, and often offered to feed me which I thought was so genuine. I did find there was a slight difference in approach from the coastral cities vs. my time in Marrakech but I believe this is the same to be said about any big city in any country around the world.

The Weather

Essaouira has pretty mild weather year-round, which is one of the reasons it’s become such a popular escape for Europeans looking to get away from colder winters. Thanks to the Atlantic breeze, the temperatures here stay much more moderate compared to other parts of Morocco, especially places like Marrakech that get extremely hot in the summer.

That said… the wind here is no joke. Essaouira is known as the “Windy City of Africa” for a reason, and there were definitely moments where I understood exactly why. The strong coastal winds are what make it such a hotspot for kitesurfing, but it also means it can feel cooler than the actual temperature, especially near the water.

I visited in April and had mostly beautiful weather around 18–24°C (65–75°F), which made it really nice for walking around, sitting at cafes, and exploring without melting in the heat.

One thing I did notice though is how dry the air felt between the wind, saltwater, and sun. My skin was definitely feeling it by the end of the trip, so if you’re prone to dry skin like me, maybe pack a good moisturizer just in case.

Pro Tip: Never Travel Without Travel Insurance!

You never know when the unexpected will happen. Make sure you are covered when traveling in case of a medical emergency or travel delays. I have been traveling with Safetey Wing for 7+ years and trust them to take care of me. They are a travel medical insurance created specifically for travellers, by travellers. At a low cost of $62/month, it's my go-to!

Appropriate Attire

While Morocco is a Muslim country and generally more conservative when it comes to clothing, Essaouira is a bit more relaxed compared to some other parts of the country because it’s a coastal tourist destination.

You’ll see plenty of tourists wearing shorts, dresses, skirts, bathing suits, and other typical beachwear around the beach and waterfront areas, and generally that’s completely fine. That said, the city is still very local and traditionally Moroccan outside of the tourist areas, so it’s good to be mindful and respectful of that when walking around town.

You definitely don’t need to fully cover your arms or legs, but I’d avoid walking through the medina or restaurants in just a bikini or shirtless outside of the beach itself. I know you’ll see some tourists doing it, but from conversations online and with locals, it’s something that does frustrate people at times.

Overall, I found Essaouira to feel pretty relaxed and easygoing. You just want to use a bit of common sense and cultural awareness while exploring to remain respectful of the locals.

Cost Expectations

Overall, I found Essaouira to be a pretty affordable destination, especially compared to Europe or North America. Like most places in Morocco, your budget here can really vary depending on whether you’re sticking to more local spots or choosing tourist-oriented cafes and restaurants.

One thing I noticed pretty quickly is that a lot of prices are casually spoken about almost like euros, especially around tourist areas. I basically found myself mentally treating 10 MAD as roughly $1 USD to quickly estimate prices while walking around.

If you’re shopping at local grocery stores, fruit stands, or little corner marts, food can be incredibly cheap. Fresh produce, snacks, yogurt, drinks, bread, and basic groceries cost next to nothing compared to western countries. If you’re staying somewhere with a kitchen, you can save a lot of money pretty easily.

Eating locally is also very affordable. Small local restaurants and casual spots serving Moroccan food are usually somewhere around 20-50 MAD ($2-5 USD) for a meal. Seafood is especially popular here because of the fishing port, and you’ll find a lot of fresh options around the city.

The more western-style cafes and trendy restaurants are definitely pricier by Moroccan standards, but still reasonable overall. Most meals at these places were around 80-120 MAD ($8-12 USD), which honestly still feels pretty affordable if you’re coming from Europe or North America.

Coffee is usually inexpensive too, around 10-15 MAD from local cafes and a bit more at the trendier brunch-style spots.

Accommodation is also fairly budget-friendly. Hostels can range anywhere from around $10-20 USD a night, while private rooms and riads are surprisingly affordable compared to many other coastal destinations.

Overall, Essaouira is the kind of place where you can travel pretty comfortably without spending a fortune.

How Much I Spent In Essaouira for 5 Days

I spent 5 days in Essaouira and tracked all of my spending using my budget app, as I always do while traveling. I like doing this because I think it gives a much more realistic look into what a destination actually costs beyond just random estimates online.

In total, I spent around $290 USD over 5 days in Essaouira, though that number is a little inflated because it included things like shopping and gifts, drinks out, and a hammam + Berber massage experience. So if you’re traveling on a budget, cooking some of your own meals, skipping alcohol, or simply relaxing by the beach, you could definitely spend less than I did.

For reference, I personally ate out for almost every meal and did a mix of local spots, seafood restaurants, cafes, and more western-style places throughout the trip.

How To Get To Essaouira Morocco

There are a few different airports you can fly into when visiting Essaouira, depending on where else you plan to travel in Morocco and what flights are cheapest from your home country.

The most common airport people fly into is Marrakech Menara Airport, which is about a 2.5-3 hour drive from Essaouira and usually has the best selection of international flights. You can also fly into Casablanca, though it’s much farther north and better suited if you plan on exploring more of the country beforehand. And if you are planning on traveling only the southern coast, you can also fly into Agadir Airport.

Essaouira does have its own small airport, however flight options are much more limited.

Once you arrive in Marrakech, you have a few options for getting to Essaouira:

1. Take The Bus

This is the cheapest option and honestly a pretty easy one. There are buses running regularly between Marrakech and Essaouira, with the main companies being Supratours and CTM.

The journey takes around 3 hours and tickets are generally somewhere around 80-120 MAD ($8-12 USD) depending on the company and time.

This is a great option if you’re traveling solo or on a budget and don’t mind a slightly longer journey.

2. Book Shared Transport (What I Did)

This is personally the option I used and honestly I found it super easy and convenient.

I booked a shuttle through Souk to Surf, which picked me up directly from Marrakech and brought me straight to Essaouira. It was much easier than trying to organize buses after landing, especially with luggage.

This option is nice because you still save money compared to a private taxi, but it’s much less hassle than navigating public transport on your own.

3. Take a Private Taxi or Transfer

If you want the easiest and fastest option, you can organize a private taxi or transfer directly from Marrakech airport to Essaouira.

Prices generally range around 700-1200 MAD ($70-120 USD) depending on the season, time of day, and your negotiation skills.

A lot of accommodations can also help arrange this for you ahead of time, which can make arrival much smoother, especially if you’re landing late at night or traveling in a group.

Where To Stay In Essaouira Morocco

When deciding where to stay in Essaouira, you’ll mainly be choosing between staying inside the medina or outside the medina closer to the beach.

Personally, I think first-time visitors should stay in or near the medina. This is where you’ll find the old city walls, souks, restaurants, cafes, shops, ramparts, and the port. It’s the most atmospheric part of Essaouira and makes it really easy to walk everywhere.

That said, if your main reason for visiting is the beach, kitesurfing, or you want somewhere a little quieter with easier access to the sand, then staying outside the medina near the beach can be a great option too. You won’t have the same old-city charm right outside your door, but you’ll be closer to the open coastline and beach walk.

Staying In The Medina

The medina is where I’d recommend most people stay, especially if it’s your first time in Essaouira. It’s walkable, atmospheric, and puts you close to most of the best things to do in the city.

Just keep in mind that cars can’t drive through most of the medina, so you may need to walk with your bags a little bit after being dropped off. It’s not a huge deal, but worth knowing if you’re arriving with a lot of luggage.

Budget Hostels & Social Stay Recommendations

La Smala Hostel (Shared or Private)

I stayed at La Smala and really liked it. It’s a beautiful hostel right in the medina with a lovely design, a social atmosphere, and one of the best views from the rooftop. Their own site describes it as being in the heart of the medina, with a rooftop overlooking the ocean, and it has both private and shared accommodation with free WiFi.

This is a great option if you want something social but still a bit nicer than a basic backpacker hostel. I stayed in the shared female dorm and the beds are super private and quiet. The rooftop has a restaurant which is amazing for having a meal. I would go up there for breakfast while I started my workday. Great place to stay if you are going to be working remotely. There are also prviate rooms if you’d prefer to have your own space at about $20 a night, such a steal!

Essaouira Van Hostel

I also stayed at Van Hostel, which is a great cheap option if you’re on a tighter budget. I paid around 100 MAD per night, making it one of the most affordable stays I found in Essaouira. The guy who runs it, Ayoub, is hilarious and will make your stay memorable.

It’s centrally located in the medina, and it was a social hostel in the heart of Essaouira, close to the souks and historic medina.

One nice bonus is that when I stayed there, I also had access to chill out at Riad Maqam Hostel for their lounge area, TV, and rooftop, which made it feel like I got the benefit of a budget stay while still being able to enjoy a nicer riad-style space.

Hostel Riad Maqam

Riad Maqam Hostel is another good option if you want a hostel that still has more of a Moroccan riad feel. It’s located in the old medina, close to the beach, souks, cafes, and historic sites. It’s also in the center of Essaouira with a rooftop terrace and shared lounge. Your a few steps away from one of the main roads.

This would be a nice option if you’re traveling solo, want to meet people, but still want somewhere that feels a little more charming than a standard hostel. We were able to come here to hang out, since it’s the same owners as Van Hostel. I really liked the vibe and location.

Riads In The Medina

If you’re looking for that traditional and iconic stay that you see online, I’d look for a riad inside the medina. A riad is a traditional Moroccan-style home built around an inner courtyard, and they’re one of the best types of stays to book in Morocco if you want something with more character.

Riad Mason Du Sud

A beautiful traditional riad located right in the heart of Essaouira’s medina, just a short walk from the beach, port, restaurants, and shops. The property has so much Moroccan character with cozy rooms, rooftop terraces, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels like a true riad experience rather than a standard hotel. This is a great option if you want something charming and authentic while still being close to everything.

Riad Dar Liouba Hotel

A beautiful traditional riad tucked away inside Essaouira’s medina with a really peaceful and authentic atmosphere. The property is full of Moroccan character with cozy rooms, rooftop terraces overlooking the medina, and charming Arab-Andalusian design throughout. This is a great option if you want somewhere relaxing and full of personality while still being walking distance to the beach, souks, restaurants, and port.

Staying Outside The Medina / Near The Beach

If you’d rather stay somewhere closer to the beach, look outside the medina walls toward the beachfront area. This can be a better option if you’re visiting Essaouira mainly for kitesurfing, beach walks, or you just want a more open and quieter feel. The tradeoff is that you won’t be right in the middle of the medina atmosphere, but Essaouira is still very walkable, so you can easily go back and forth between the beach and old town. (Think 10-20 minute walk to reach the medina instead of being right in it).

This area is good for:

  • kitesurfers and surfers
  • families
  • people who want easier taxi access
  • anyone who prefers beach walks over medina wandering
  • travelers with lots of luggage

For beach-area stays, I’d look for hotels, apartments, or guesthouses near Essaouira Beach / Plage d’Essaouira rather than deep inside the medina.

Beachfront & Higher-End Options

Le Medina Essaouira Thalassa Sea & Spa – MGallery

One of the more popular beachfront hotel options with direct beach access, a pool, spa facilities, and larger modern rooms. Good if you want comfort and convenience.

Salut Maroc!

A really beautiful boutique hotel with colorful Moroccan interiors and ocean views right on the edge of the medina walls. Probably one of the most photogenic stays in Essaouira. It has a restaurant that is known for being a great vibe at sunset, with live music during your dinner.

Things To Do In Essaouira Morocco

Essaouira is the kind of place where you get the best of both worlds: a charming city mixed with long beach days and ocean views. While the medina isn’t nearly as massive or chaotic as Marrakech, it’s still the type of place where you can spend hours wandering through little alleyways, browsing markets, and stumbling across rooftop cafes, local artisans, and hidden corners.

And when you need a break from the medina, you can head down to the fishing port for fresh seafood, walk along the beach promenade, or try some of the city’s most popular activities like kitesurfing, quad biking, horseback riding, and hammams.

I’ve put together a list of 14 things to do in Essaouira so you can pick and choose what best suits your travel style. And honestly… if you can’t fit everything in, it just gives you an excuse to come back.

Wander The Medina & Old Walls

The medina is the old walled part of the city located beside the beach and fishing port. It’s essentially a maze of narrow alleyways and side streets that wind past little shops, local artisans, restaurants, rooftop cafes, and market stalls.

Compared to Marrakech, I found Essaouira’s medina much more relaxed and easier to wander through without feeling completely overwhelmed. It still has plenty going on, but at a much calmer pace.

One of the best things to do is walk along the old seafront ramparts and city walls overlooking the ocean. The views here are beautiful, especially around sunset when the light starts reflecting off the old stone walls and crashing waves below. There’s also the old fort area you can explore while walking along the ramparts.

If you’d rather explore the medina with someone knowledgeable who can teach you more about the history, culture, hidden corners, and local life of Essaouira, then I’d definitely recommend booking a guided walking tour with a local. It’s a great option if you want a deeper understanding of the city beyond simply wandering around on your own.

Watch Sunset From The Ramparts & Beach

I personally LOVE a good sunset, it’s honestly my favorite part of the day. And Essaouira is such a good place for them because there are so many different backdrops depending on the vibe you want.

One of the best spots is from the old ramparts overlooking the ocean. From here, you can watch the sun set behind the rocks while the golden light reflects off the old stone walls and medina buildings.

Another spot I really loved was all the way down at the far end of the beach – the complete opposite direction from the medina. It’s about a 30-minute walk, but the views are beautiful over there. In the distance you’ll see rocky islands and an old fort tower sitting out in the water, which makes such a nice backdrop once the sky starts turning orange and pink.

This is also where a lot of the camel and horseback rides happen, so if you’re lucky, you can get those really iconic beach sunset scenes with horses or camels walking along the shore.

Pro tip: don’t leave the second the sun disappears. Some of the prettiest colors actually happen 15–20 minutes afterward once the sky turns soft pink and pastel.

Visit The Fishing Port & Seafood Market

If you love seafood, the fishing port is definitely worth visiting. Essaouira has historically been one of Morocco’s most important fishing ports, and even today it’s still a huge part of daily life in the city.

Down by the port you’ll see fishermen bringing in the fresh catch of the day while seagulls circle overhead and locals move seafood around in giant blue crates. It’s busy, chaotic, and really interesting to walk through even if you’re not planning to eat there.

You’ll also find oysters, fish, shrimp, squid, and other seafood being sold fresh right at the market stalls. One of the most popular things to do is pick out your seafood and then have it grilled fresh nearby.

I didn’t end up doing this myself since I was traveling solo, but it looked SO good and is definitely something I’d come back and do with my partner next time.

essaouira morocco seafood

Eat Fresh Seafood at the Port

Another great place to eat seafood is at the seafood restaurants right beside the port. You’ll see rows of restaurants displaying the fresh catch of the day right out front on ice, and you simply choose what you want and they’ll grill it up fresh for you.

This is probably one of the most popular food experiences in Essaouira and a must-do if you enjoy seafood.

Shop The Souks & Markets

If you love shopping, Morocco is a bit dangerous for your wallet in the best way possible.

Coming from Taghazout and Imsouane where the shopping was pretty limited, arriving in Essaouira felt like stepping into a treasure hunt. There’s so much beautiful stuff to look through: handwoven rugs, painted ceramics, leather bags, handmade shoes, jewelry, scarves, spices, lanterns… the list goes on.

One thing to know though is that bargaining is very normal here. The first price you’re given usually isn’t the final price, and sellers expect a bit of back-and-forth negotiation.

I am personally TERRIBLE at this lol. My boyfriend is usually the designated negotiator when we travel together because I cave almost immediately. So unlike me… try to hold your ground a little.

Relax At The Beach

If you’re looking to spend some time at the beach, Essaouira definitely gives you plenty of space to do it. The beach here is massive and stretches for what feels like forever, making it great for long walks along the coastline.

Now… whether you’ll be fully relaxing or fighting for your life against the wind is another question LOL. Some days are beautiful and calm, while other days the wind can be intense. But even when it’s windy, it’s still a really nice place to walk, take in the ocean views, and enjoy the sunshine.

essaouira morocco beach

Try Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing is probably Essaouira’s most iconic activity thanks to the city’s strong Atlantic winds. People come from all over the world to learn here, and you’ll constantly see colorful kites flying over the beach throughout the day.

Because the wind conditions here are so consistent, Essaouira is considered one of the best places for beginners to learn. There are plenty of schools offering lessons and beginner packages, so if you’ve ever been curious about trying it, this is probably the best place to do it.

Go Quad Biking Through The Dunes & Coastline

This experience was gifted to me by Palma Quad in exchange for featuring it in my travel guide. As always, all opinions are my own. **Photos are still pending to be added**

One of the highlights of my trip to Essaouira ended up being a quad biking tour with Palma Quad. After spending the last six weeks mostly lounging by the beach in smaller coastal towns, I was very ready to do something a bit more adventurous and get out into the landscapes outside the city.

I looked online and saw that Palma Quad had really great reviews and a few different tour options to choose from. I ended up doing their 3-hour quad biking tour first thing in the morning, which was honestly a great call. It meant we got out before the beach became too busy and before the sun got too hot.

essaouira morocco palma quad tours
essaouira morocco palma quad tours

I hadn’t been on an ATV in probably over ten years, so I was definitely a little rusty. But don’t worry, before you leave, they go over everything properly, including how to drive the quad, safety rules, and what to expect on the route. They also try to pair people based on skill level, so whether you’re a complete beginner or have more experience, you can enjoy the tour at a pace that feels right for you.

The route takes you out of the city and into the dunes, coastline, beach trails, and wild landscapes around Essaouira. If you don’t have enough time in Morocco to visit the actual desert, this is such a fun little substitute. And you still get that sandy, adventurous feeling without having to travel far.

As much as I love beach time, I also love getting a little adventure in too. I just had to hope I wasn’t going to flip it like I did the last time I rode one LOL.

What The Tour Includes

The 3-hour Palma Quad tour includes:

  • Safety briefing before you start
  • Professional guide
  • Helmet and riding gear
  • Short test drive before heading out
  • Quad biking through dunes, beach trails, rocky paths, and coastal viewpoints
  • Stops for photos along the route
  • Water and a snack
  • Photos from the tour
  • Beginner-friendly guidance
What To Expect

Expect a mix of adventure, scenery, sand, wind, and a lot of fun. The tour starts at the Palma Quad office where you’ll get checked in, briefed on safety, fitted with your gear, and given a short test drive so you can get comfortable with the quad before heading out properly.

From there, you’ll make your way toward the beach and dunes, with plenty of different terrain along the way. Some parts are sandy, some are rocky, and some open up into wide coastal views where you can really take in the landscape.

It’s not one of those tours where you’re just driving in a boring circle. You actually feel like you’re getting out and seeing a different side of Essaouira, which is what made it so fun for me.

My Experience

Palma Quad is located right by the beach just outside the medina walls, and was about a 15-minute walk from my accommodation inside the medina. Upon arriving, I could immediately tell it was a proper professional setup, which honestly was a nice change from some of the more chaotic tour shops I had come across in other parts of Morocco.

When I walked inside, the office was beautifully designed and organized, and I met the owner, Rachid. You could immediately tell how much pride he takes in his business and the experience he creates for people. Everything felt very well-run and welcoming from the start.

Once I got checked in, I was paired into a small group with two German ladies – a mother and daughter duo – who became my tour companions for the morning. We were given lockers to safely store our belongings before getting geared up for the ride.

I definitely recommend wearing comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a little sandy in. If you don’t have long sleeves or extra layers, don’t worry because they provide jackets, helmets, gloves, and everything else you need.

Before heading out, Rachid walked us through everything in detail: how to operate the quad, accelerate, brake, turn properly, position ourselves on the bike, and basic safety instructions. If you’ve never ridden a quad before, don’t stress because they really do take the time to make sure everyone feels comfortable before leaving.

essaouira morocco palma quad tours

After the briefing, we headed out onto the beach where the quads were waiting for us and met our guide for the day, Aymayne – who was honestly AWESOME.

Since none of us were particularly experienced drivers, we first did a practice session on the beach before heading into the dunes. We slowly followed Aymayne while practicing turns, weaving, and getting comfortable maneuvering the bikes.

Once everyone felt confident, the speed limiters were removed from the quads and we officially headed off into the dunes.

And this is where the fun REALLY started.

We rode through soft rolling sand dunes, along the coastline, past cows and trees, and through some seriously beautiful scenery. At one point we went around 16+ kilometers along the coast and dunes.

Now listen… I definitely got stuck in the sand a few times LOL. But honestly that almost made it more fun. Every time one of us got stuck, Aymayne would come over with what honestly seemed like superhuman strength and somehow pull the quad right out. He was super patient and encouraging the entire time, and quickly taught me that sometimes you just have to fully commit and gas it up the dunes instead of hesitating.

essaouira morocco quad biking palma quad tours

Once we reached the far end of the route, we stopped for a little break where they provided us with water and snacks while we took in the views.

Then came one of the most fun parts: this super steep dune drop that honestly gave such an adrenaline rush. I genuinely wish we could have done it multiple times.

On the way back along the beach, we were finally comfortable enough to really open up the speed of the quads and it was SUCH a blast. There’s honestly no better feeling than flying down the beach with the sun on your face, the wind in your hair, and ocean views beside you.

Overall, I highly recommend this tour if you’re looking to add a little adventure to your Essaouira trip outside of simply wandering the medina.

Rachid and his team were absolutely top-notch and created such a fun, safe, and memorable experience. The whole setup also looked amazing visually too – the blue sky, the dunes, the bikes, the scarves – it all made for some incredible photos and videos.

Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or in a group, this is such a fun activity to do. If you’re coming with someone else, you can even ride together on the same quad, though personally… I definitely recommend driving your own if you can.

I’d also highly recommend booking the morning tour before it gets too hot and before the beach becomes busy. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Horseback Ride Along The Beach

Another really popular activity in Essaouira is horseback riding along the beach. Because the beach is so long and open, it’s actually a really beautiful place to ride, especially around sunset.

I’ve also heard from more experienced riders that this is one of the better places to ride in Morocco because you can really open up and go faster in certain areas rather than just doing slow tourist-style walking rides the entire time.

Visit A Hammam & Get A Massage

No trip to Morocco would feel complete without experiencing a hammam at least once. A hammam is essentially a traditional steam bath experience focused on cleansing and exfoliating the skin, and they’re a huge part of Moroccan culture.

I had actually done a hammam in Turkey before, so I was really curious to compare the experience with a Moroccan one. To read about my hammam experience in Turkey, click here.

After comparing reviews and prices around Essaouira, I noticed most hammam + massage packages were around 600-700 MAD ($60-70 USD). While that’s still affordable compared to the USA, I’m always on the hunt for a bargain. I ended up booking with Spa Rhayane, which offered a traditional hammam and a 1-hour Berber massage for 450 MAD.

The spa itself was located inside a beautiful riad and felt much more private and spa-like rather than communal. After changing into my bikini bottoms and robe, I was brought into the warm steam room where I relaxed on a heated stone while black soap was applied to my skin. After letting it soak, the exfoliation process began – which was both horrifying and satisfying at the same time knowing how much dead skin came off LOL.

Afterward, my hair was washed, I was rinsed off, and then brought into another room for my hour-long massage.

Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and thought it was excellent value for the price. I do know there are more traditional communal hammams where you can stay and relax longer, but since I was traveling solo, this setup was honestly perfect for me.

Watch Sunset On A Camel Ride Along The Beach

This experience was gifted to me by Palma Quad in exchange for featuring it in my travel guide. As always, all opinions are entirely my own. **Photos are still pending to be added**

Okay yes… riding camels on the beach at sunset definitely sounds like the most stereotypical Morocco activity ever LOL. But it’s still one of those iconic things you kind of have to do at least once while visiting Morocco.

And let me tell you… seeing camels walking along the beach at sunset really is a vibe.

Yes, it’s a little touristy, but if you’ve never been up close and personal with camels before, it’s pretty cool. They’re these gigantic, awkward creatures whose bodies somehow fold up like origami, and they spend approximately 98% of their existence chewing on something.

I had ridden camels before in India, so I already knew I liked these weird little guys.

essaouira morocco sunset camel riding
essaouira morocco sunset camel riding
What The Tour Includes

The sunset camel ride includes:

  • Guided camel ride along the beach and dunes
  • Traditional Moroccan attire and headscarf for photos
  • Friendly local guide
  • Sunset views over the Atlantic Ocean
  • Photo and video opportunities throughout the ride
  • Beginner-friendly experience
  • Great activity for solo travelers, couples, and groups

The overall ride lasts around an hour and is designed to line up perfectly with golden hour and sunset.

What To Expect

The tour begins at the Palma Quad office located just outside the medina near the beach. Once you arrive, you’ll get checked in, store your belongings in lockers, and get dressed in the traditional Moroccan-style outfit and scarf they provide for the experience.

Afterward, you’ll hop into a small truck which takes you a few minutes outside the city toward the camel mounting area near the dunes.

Once there, the guides help everyone get situated on their camels and explain how to safely mount and ride them. If you’ve never ridden a camel before, don’t worry, the camels walk very slowly and the guides are there to help the entire time.

The route takes you through the sand dunes and along the beach during golden hour and sunset, with multiple stops for photos and videos along the way. The pace is very relaxed and scenic rather than adventurous or fast-paced like the quad biking tour.

This experience is definitely more about the atmosphere, views, and overall experience of watching the sunset from the beach while riding camels along the coastline.

My Experience

So once again, I walked down to Palma Quad which is located by the beach, around a 15-minute walk from the medina where I was staying. When I arrived, I met the others in my group and we were given access to lockers to safely store our things before getting ready.

I definitely recommend wearing something comfortable that you can easily climb onto a camel in. It can also get surprisingly chilly once the sun starts setting because of the wind coming off the ocean (I went in May), so I’d maybe recommend bringing long sleeves or pants just in case.

They then dressed us in these really beautiful traditional Moroccan-style robes and head wraps, which honestly made the whole experience feel even more fun and immersive.

I also HIGHLY recommend sunglasses because once the sun starts lowering, there are moments where it shines directly into your eyes across the beach.

After we got dressed, we hopped into a truck which drove us a few minutes outside the city toward the dunes where the camels were waiting for us.

And honestly… mounting a camel is ALWAYS insane LOL.

If you’ve never done it before, when they stand up it genuinely feels like you’re suddenly 10 feet in the air and about to fall forward and backward at the same time. It’s such a weird feeling.

Once everyone was mounted and ready, we slowly made our way from the dunes down onto the beach where we spent the next hour riding along the coastline while the sun slowly set behind the ocean.

The whole atmosphere was really beautiful and peaceful. Between the golden light, the ocean breeze, the silhouettes of the camels, and the colors in the sky, it made for such a scenic experience.

We stopped a few times throughout the ride for photos and videos, and I really appreciated that the guides actively helped everyone capture good content rather than rushing through the experience.

Seeing the other groups of camels walking along the beach against the sunset backdrop looked SO cinematic, I was trying to capture it off my phone while bouncing around.

At the end of the ride, we returned back toward the dunes where we had to dismount the camels – which is truly more intense than getting on them because when they sit down you feel like you’re being launched forward LOL.

Overall, it was such a lovely experience and a really memorable way to spend sunset in Essaouira.

If you’re looking for one of those classic Morocco experiences mixed with beautiful scenery and memorable photos, I’d definitely recommend adding this tour to your trip.

Drink Moroccan Tea At A Rooftop Cafe

Essaouira has SO many rooftop cafes and terraces that you could spend your entire trip trying different ones.

One thing I’d definitely recommend is grabbing a Moroccan mint tea and sitting up on a rooftop overlooking the ocean or medina while taking in the atmosphere. It’s one of those simple experiences that just feels very Morocco.

The one I went to was Mutalat, which isn’t far from the sea wall so you get a view of the sea.

Explore The Art Galleries

Essaouira has a surprisingly artsy and creative vibe compared to some other Moroccan cities. As you wander through the medina, you’ll come across loads of little art galleries showcasing everything from paintings and photography to modern Moroccan artwork and handcrafted pieces from local artists.

Even if you’re not huge into art, they’re still fun to pop into while exploring because many of them are beautifully designed inside as well.

Enjoy The Food & Drink Scene

I could honestly eat and drink my way around Essaouira for weeks and still not try everything I wanted to.

Compared to some other places in Morocco, Essaouira has a really good mix of traditional Moroccan food, fresh seafood, trendy cafes, rooftop restaurants, and even a few places to grab drinks and cocktails. I’ll share all of my favorite recommendations later in this guide.

Take A Day Trip

If you’re staying in Essaouira for a while and want to explore outside the city, there are quite a few good day trip options nearby.

You can head to smaller coastal towns like Sidi Kaouki for a quieter beach vibe, visit Marrakech for a completely different city atmosphere, or explore other parts of Morocco’s coastline nearby.

I’ll also include some tour recommendations below if you’d prefer to book organized experiences during your stay.

Day Trips from Essaouira Morocco

If you’re staying in Essaouira for more than a few days, there are some really good nearby destinations you can either visit as day trips or add onto your Morocco itinerary afterward.

Marrakech

Marrakech is located about 3 hours from Essaouira and is one of the most popular cities to pair together on a Morocco itinerary. Compared to Essaouira’s laid-back coastal atmosphere, Marrakech is much busier, more chaotic, and packed full of souks, palaces, rooftop restaurants, riads, gardens, and historic sites. It’s definitely one of those cities that feels sensory overload in the best way possible. For me, 2 days was enough in Marrakech so I think you can get away with just exploring it for a day.

While you technically can do it as a day trip from Essaouira, just know it will be a very long day with around 6 hours of driving total. Personally, I’d recommend spending at least a night or two there if your itinerary allows.

The easiest way to get there is by:

  • CTM or Supratours bus
  • shared shuttle
  • private transfer

Buses run regularly between the two cities and are fairly easy to book online or at the station.

Sidi Kaouki

If you want a quieter beach escape outside of Essaouira, Sidi Kaouki is a really nice option.

It’s a small surf town located around 25-30 minutes south of Essaouira and is known for its relaxed atmosphere, long beach, surfing, horseback riding, and sand dunes.

Compared to Essaouira, there’s honestly not a whole lot “to do” there besides slow down, enjoy the beach, surf, and relax which is the appeal.

You can get there by:

  • taxi
  • shared taxi
  • local bus
  • organized surf transfer

This is a really easy half-day or full-day trip if you simply want a more peaceful beach vibe for a day.

Imsuoane

Imsouane is located around 3 hours south of Essaouira and ended up being one of my favorite places in during my trip to Morocco. I originally only planned to stay a short time and somehow ended up spending an entire month there.

It’s a tiny coastal surf town with a super laid-back atmosphere and is especially famous for having one of the longest right-hand waves in the world. The bay there is sandy with no rocks, which also makes it one of the best places for beginners to learn how to surf safely.

Compared to Taghazout, I found Imsouane much calmer, slower, and more peaceful overall.

While it technically can be done as a day trip from Essaouira, I’d personally recommend staying at least a few nights if you have the time because it’s the kind of place people end up not wanting to leave.

You can get there by:

  • Supratours bus
  • shared taxi
  • private transfer
  • surf shuttle services

If you’re building out a Morocco itinerary, I’d highly recommend pairing Essaouira and Imsouane together. They complement each other really well.

Where To Eat & Drink In Essaouira Morocco

I could truly spend weeks eating my way around Essaouira. Between the fresh seafood, rooftop restaurants, little local breakfast spots, French bakeries, trendy cafes, and traditional Moroccan restaurants, there’s SO much good food packed into this small coastal city.

Here are some of my favorite spots I tried while there:

Restaurant Kmissa

If you’re looking for delicious traditional Moroccan food, this was easily one of my favorite restaurants in Essaouira.

It’s a small little restaurant run by the loveliest women, and you can genuinely tell how much love and care goes into each dish they make. Everything tasted incredibly fresh and full of flavor.

I had the chicken seffa here which was DIVINE, along with the zaalouk (Moroccan eggplant dish) and their mint lemonade. Honestly everything was so good that I immediately wished I had more time in Essaouira just to come back and try more dishes. The meat tagines people were ordering around me also looked incredible.

Just a heads up: it’s a really small venue and fills up FAST. They also don’t really like people standing around waiting outside, so if there’s no table available, just wander nearby and check back periodically.

Fishburger

This place is busy literally all the time… and after eating here, I completely understood why.

I ordered their crispy chicken burger with onion rings and a mint lemonade, and WOW. Everything was insanely flavorful, right down to the sauces. I ended up coming back another day to try their guacamole nachos and those were just as good.

This is definitely one of those casual spots you have to try while in Essaouira.

Patisserie Driss

I randomly stopped in here one morning before heading out for a tour and I’m SO glad I did.

It’s a French-style bakery with loads of freshly baked pastries and breakfast options. I had the almond croissant which was super soft and flaky, along with a fish pastry that honestly I was hesitant to try for breakfast… but it ended up being SO good. It had rice and fish wrapped inside this warm flaky pastry crust and was packed with flavor.

I also grabbed a coffee, and the total for everything came to only around 30 MAD, which felt like insanely good value.

Restaurant Morocco

Another really lovely spot for traditional Moroccan food.

I came here specifically for the rfissa and it was absolutely delicious. You could tell they took their time preparing everything properly because the flavors were so rich and comforting.

The people running the restaurant were also incredibly sweet, and honestly I can completely understand why this place is so highly rated.

Seafood At The Port

One of the most iconic food experiences in Essaouira is eating fresh seafood down by the fishing port.

You’ll see rows of seafood stalls and restaurants displaying the fresh catch of the day out front on ice. You simply choose what you want and they’ll grill it up fresh for you.

Even just walking through the area is an experience on its own with all the fishermen, seagulls, smoke from the grills, and chaos of the port happening around you.

Salut Maroc

If you’re looking for a more elevated dining experience, definitely check out Salut Maroc.

This is probably one of the most popular rooftop restaurants in Essaouira and for good reason. The decor is absolutely beautiful, the atmosphere feels really special, and the rooftop views overlooking the ocean are gorgeous around sunset.

They also sometimes have live music in the evenings which adds a really fun atmosphere.

I’d definitely recommend reserving ahead of time if you want a good table around sunset because it’s a very popular spot.

UMIA

If you’re craving a more upscale dinner experience, UMIA is SUCH a good option.

The food here was incredible, the wine selection was great, and the overall atmosphere felt really intimate and beautifully done. Everything from the presentation to the service felt very elevated without being overly pretentious.

Definitely a nice spot for a date night or if you just want to treat yourself to a really good dinner while in Essaouira.

Local Breakfast Spot Beside Family Seafood

One of my favorite meals in Essaouira was actually from a tiny little local breakfast place beside Family Seafood. It doesn’t even have a noticeable name, but the food was SO good and ridiculously cheap.

I highly recommend trying the freshly made batbout, omelette khlii agriche, and fresh orange juice. Everything tasted homemade and super comforting.

Honestly one of my favorite cheap eats from the entire trip. Just type in Family Seafood and you’ll see it right there before it on the corner.

Rosa Blanca

If you’re staying outside the medina near the beach, Rosa Blanca is a really good breakfast and brunch option.

The food was super good, the prices were affordable, and it’s located right near the beachfront area. If you’re staying inside the medina it’s about a 15-minute walk, which honestly isn’t bad at all.

Definitely worth checking out if you want a nice breakfast spot outside the busier old town.

Retro Corner (Vegan)

If you’re vegan or vegetarian, Retro Corner is a great little spot to add to your list. They serve flavorful plant-based dishes, healthy bowls, fresh juices, and smoothies in a cozy laid-back atmosphere right inside the medina.

Best Cafes & Coffee Spots In Essaouira

If you’re anything like me and love finding cute cafes while traveling, Essaouira has quite a few good ones scattered around the medina and beach area. Whether you’re looking for a quick coffee, somewhere to work on your laptop, or a rooftop to slow down for a while, there’s no shortage of options.

Brotherhood

Brotherhood was probably my favorite coffee spot I tried in Essaouira. The coffee was REALLY good, hence the 5 stars. It is however a street-facing vendor and they have a few stools for seating, but other than that it’s not a sit in type of place. Super honest workers though, I left my backpack there and they sent someone out into the city to track me down to return my bag. The USA would never lol.

Mandala Society

Mandala Society is another really popular cafe in Essaouira, especially among travelers and remote workers.

They have really good coffee, healthy brunch-style food, smoothie bowls, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to hang out for a while. It’s also a nice place if you need a small break from traditional Moroccan food for a meal or two.

Mega Loft Rooftop

If you’re looking for more of a rooftop cafe vibe, Mega Loft is a nice spot to grab coffee or mint tea while overlooking the medina and ocean.

The rooftop atmosphere is really relaxing, especially later in the afternoon around golden hour

Patisserie Driss

I mentioned this one earlier in the food section, but it’s also worth mentioning again for coffee and breakfast.

Their pastries were SO good, and honestly the prices were amazing for what you got. Perfect quick breakfast stop before heading out for the day.

Where To Drink In Essaouira Morocco

While Morocco is a Muslim country and alcohol isn’t nearly as common as in Europe or North America, Essaouira is actually one of the easier places in Morocco to grab a drink if you want one.

TAROS

TAROS is probably the most well-known nightlife and rooftop drink spot in Essaouira.

It’s located right by the medina walls overlooking the ocean and is a really fun place to go around sunset or later in the evening for drinks and music. They often have DJs or live music, and the rooftop atmosphere is great.

Definitely more lively and touristy compared to some other spots.

ALMA

If you’re looking for a really fun spot for drinks, music, and atmosphere, definitely check out ALMA.

This place had SUCH a cool vibe when we went. It’s located just outside the medina walls and had live Moroccan/Gnawa-style music playing with traditional instruments and singers. The whole place felt really lively and atmospheric without feeling overly touristy or clubby.

It’s a really nice spot to go for drinks in the evening if you want something a little more energetic than a rooftop lounge while still feeling very “Morocco.”

Definitely one of the more memorable nights I had in Essaouira.

Overall, there are actually quite a few places in Essaouira that serve alcohol compared to some other parts of Morocco, these are just a few of the spots I personally tried or came across during my time there.

That said, it’s still important to be mindful and respectful that Morocco is a Muslim country where alcohol isn’t part of everyday life for many locals. Most people are completely fine with tourists enjoying drinks, especially in places like Essaouira, but it’s always good to be respectful and aware of the culture while visiting.

Sample Itineraries for Essaouira Morocco

3 Day Itinerary In Essaouira

>>Day 1: Explore The Medina & Port

Spend your first day getting lost wandering through the medina and soaking in the atmosphere of Essaouira. Browse the little shops and markets, walk along the old ramparts overlooking the ocean, and take your time exploring all the little alleyways and rooftops.

For lunch, head down to the fishing port and try some of the fresh seafood. This is one of the most iconic things to do in Essaouira and such a cool experience.

Afterward, walk along the beach promenade and end your evening watching sunset from either the ramparts or the far end of the beach.

For dinner, I highly recommend Restaurant Kmissa. This ended up being one of my favorite meals in Essaouira and was SO good.

>>Day 2: Beach Day, Hammam & Rooftop Tea

Start your morning with breakfast and coffee from Pâtisserie Driss in town before heading down to the beach. I had their almond croissant, a cappuccino and fish pastry all for 30 MAD and it was soo delicious. Freshly baked and warm, YUM.

If you’re feeling adventurous, this is a great day to try kitesurfing or horseback riding along the beach. If not, simply relax, walk the coastline, and enjoy the slower pace of the city.

In the afternoon, book yourself a hammam and massage experience. After all the walking and exploring, … your body will thank you.

Later in the evening, head to a rooftop cafe for Moroccan mint tea while watching the city slowly wind down. Watch the sunset either from your rooftop cafe, or head to either the ramparts or the beach (whichever one you didn’t do on Day 1).

>>Day 3: Quad Biking, Camel Ride & Final Exploring

For your final day, I’d recommend booking a quad biking and camel riding experience. This ended up being one of the highlights of my trip because you get to see a completely different side of Essaouira outside the medina.

Afterward, spend your last evening doing a bit more shopping or revisiting any cafes and restaurants you loved during your stay.

If you’re craving something more casual, grab a fish burger from Fishburger before one final sunset walk along the beach. Also get the onion rings and lemonade – you won’t be disappointed. This place is always busy for a reason!

5 Day Essaouira Itinerary

>>Day 1: Arrive & Explore The Medina

Arrive in Essaouira and spend your first day settling in and wandering around the medina. Don’t over-plan too much this day. Essaouira is really one of those places best enjoyed slowly.

Explore the little alleyways, browse the shops, walk along the oceanfront walls, and stop for mint tea or coffee whenever you feel like it.

For dinner, head to Restaurant Kmissa for one of the best meals in the city.

>>Day 2: Fishing Port, Seafood & Sunset

Spend your morning walking around the fishing port and seafood market watching the fishermen bring in the catch of the day.

For lunch, choose fresh seafood directly from the market and have it grilled for you.

Later, spend some time relaxing at the beach or walking along the promenade before ending the evening with sunset from the ramparts.

If you want drinks afterward, Essaouira actually has a few nice spots to enjoy wine or cocktails compared to some other Moroccan cities.

>>Day 3: Quad Biking & Camel Riding

Today is the perfect day to get outside the city a little more and experience some adventure.

Book a quad biking and camel riding experience through the dunes and coastline surrounding Essaouira. This is one of the most popular activities in the area and such a fun way to see the landscape outside the medina.

Spend the evening relaxing afterward with dinner at Salut Maroc or another rooftop restaurant overlooking the ocean.

>>Day 4: Hammam, Shopping & Rooftop Cafes

After a few busy days, slow things down a little.

Start your morning with breakfast from one of the French bakeries and coffee from Brotherhood before spending some time shopping through the souks and artisan shops around the medina.

This is the perfect day to pick up souvenirs like rugs, ceramics, leather goods, scarves, spices, and jewelry.

In the afternoon, book a hammam and Berber massage experience to fully relax.

End your evening with Moroccan tea on a rooftop while watching the city lights start to come alive.

>>Day 5: Beach Day Or Day Trip

For your final day, either spend some time fully relaxing at the beach or take a small day trip outside the city.

If you’re interested in surfing or kitesurfing, this is a great day to finally give it a try. Otherwise, simply enjoy one final slow day soaking in the atmosphere of Essaouira before moving on to your next destination in Morocco.

And of course… one last sunset is mandatory.

Working & Traveling as a Digital Nomad in Essaouira Morocco

Best Coworking & Coliving Spots

Essaouira actually has a surprisingly solid digital nomad scene for a smaller coastal city.

Noqta Space Restaurant Coworking

This is probably the main coworking hub in Essaouira right now for digital nomads and remote workers. It’s specifically built around the coworking + community concept and seems to be the place most nomads mention when staying in the city. They also have coliving options and community events.

The space itself has:

  • strong WiFi
  • work tables
  • private work rooms
  • rooftop areas
  • food & coffee
  • a more social/community atmosphere
Welkam Inn

This one gets mentioned quite a bit in digital nomad guides for Essaouira as a productive place for remote workers. AND it’s cheap like $10 a night. Some travelers specifically mention the fiber internet and quieter work environment.

Good option if:

  • you need reliable WiFi
  • you actually need to WORK work
  • you prefer less social distraction

Laptop-Friendly Cafes & Hostels

Hostel La Smala

This is more hostel/social vibes than dedicated coworking, but honestly the rooftop here is SUCH a nice place to chill with a laptop for a few hours. Good atmosphere, ocean views, and a decent setup if you’re casually working while traveling. Plus with the restaurant, you don’t. evenneed to leave to eat.

Co-work Day Pass

Coworking spots like Noqta Space Restaurant Coworking generally offer day passes or casual coworking access rather than requiring long-term memberships.

Indulge in Essaouira Morocco

essaouira morocco medina

Essaouira ended up being a fantastic stop in Morocco. It’s lively without feeling too chaotic, touristy without completely losing its local charm, and there’s honestly such a good mix of things to do between the beach, medina, food scene, markets, and activities.

I really wish I had spent longer than 5 days here, and it’s definitely somewhere I’ll return to in the future for a longer stay. I met some amazing people during my time here and genuinely had such a fun experience overall.

Whether you’re coming for the kitesurfing, fresh seafood, beach walks, shopping, hammams, or simply to slow down for a little while, Essaouira is absolutely worth adding to your Morocco itinerary.

And if you’re planning a bigger Morocco trip, be sure to check out my guide to Taghazout below as well. I’ll also have my full Imsouane guide coming soon too – which I’m especially excited to share since I ended up spending almost an entire month there it was that good!
